Olivet Cemetery. Joel went to be with his Lord on March 6, 2020, in Hugo, OK at the age of 72.

Joel was born May 22, 1947, to Ottis and Ruth Edrie (Baggett) Mashburn.  He lived in this area most of his life and was a member of the First Baptist Church. Joel graduated from Hugo High School in 1965 and from Southwestern Oklahoma State University as a Doctor of Pharmacy in 1969. Joel served the Hugo community as a pharmacist for over fifty-years. He began working at Palace Drug Store in 1969 and worked there until it was destroyed by fire on Christmas Eve 1998. He began working at City Drug after the fire and worked there until 2015, when he tried a short stint at retirement.  He completed his pharmacy career at Hugo Express Pharmacy. Throughout his career, he also served as the pharmacist for Choctaw Memorial Hospital, Hugo Manor Nursing Home, Baptist Village Retirement Center and Lane Frost Rehabilitation Center. Joel was presented the Choctaw Memorial Hospital A.L. Fountain Award in 2016.

Joel was a football referee and served on the Hugo School Board and Kiamichi Technology Centers School Board. He also served on the Choctaw County Industrial Authority and Estes House Board of Directors. Joel was Hugo Citizen of the Year in 2012.

Joel was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church the majority of his adult life where he had many duties over the years including Sunday school teacher, youth sponsor, trustee, finance committee, various search committees and personnel committee. Joel also served as a board member for the Baptist Village Communities. Joel and Susie were presented Baptist Village Will & Nora Basket Legacy of Love Award in 2015.

Joel married the love of his life, Susie Brown on May 10, 1980, in Hugo.  He had a compassionate and generous heart that encompassed not only his family but his entire community.

As Santa, he spread joy to area children and adults with his jovial spirit, rosy cheeks and real beard.  It wasn't Christmas in Hugo until "the real" Santa rode into town on an elephant.
